Nepali parties divided over national flag issue

KATHMANDU, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nepali political parties are divided on whether to retain the current flag or design a new one.

At a sub-committee meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on Wednesday, the single largest and opposition party the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (UCPN), and the Rastriya Janamorcha and Dalit Janajati Party, proposed to change the national flag, but their proposal was opposed by the other parties.

Leaders from the ruling Nepali Congress, the Communist Party ofNepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) and other parties defended the present flag as it has become a symbol of recognition even in the international level.

The UCPN-M has been calling for the provision of a new model of national flag that should contain stars equal in numbers to the number of federal units after the restructuring of the state.

The CA at its first meeting on May 28, 2008 declared Nepal a federal democratic republic, and is expected to draft a new constitution by May 28, 2010.
