Russian lawmaker proposes reintroducing imperial flag

MOSCOW, July 17 (RAPSI) – Liberal Democratic Party Deputy Mikhail Degtyaryov has submitted a bill to parliament to change Russia’s current white, blue and red state flag to the black, yellow and white standard used in imperial Russia in the 19th century, the party announced on its website.

The State Duma will discuss the bill at its fall session.

“Everyone who respects their homeland would like to live in a great country with a great history. The reintroduction of the old state flag will be evidence of the nascent revival of the forgotten traditions of the past centuries and the strengthening of Russia’s international standing. We won brilliant victories under the imperial flag, which can also unite all citizens of Russia today,” Degtyaryov said, as cited on the party’s website.

A letter of comment to the bill reads that when the black, yellow and white flag flew over Russia, the empire incorporated new territories, in particular Crimea, parts of Eastern Prussia, Alaska, the Caucasus, Poland, the Baltics, Central Asia and Finland. Degtyaryov also said the current blue, white and red flag was approved as the state flag without public debates.

Vladimir Pligin, a Untied Russia deputy and head of the State Duma Committee on Constitutional Law and State Development, previously noted that the current Russian flag is respected by people and ensures historical continuity.

The black-yellow-white flag was the official national flag of the Russian Empire from 1858 to 1883. It is currently used by Russian nationalists and monarchists. Most Russian historians argue that the current tricolor flag was first introduced by Peter the Great in the late 17th century.
